Support Paramount When Switching EHRs

Health IT Outcomes visited UPMC Hamot to talk with Dr. Richard Long, SVP & CMO; David Gibbons, executive VP & COO; and Lisa McChesney, director of information systems. Specifically, the trio talked about the lessons learned when transitioning its EHR from Soarian to Cerner – referred to as the “Big Bang” – when Hamot merged with UPMC in 2011.

Long acknowledges the benefits of the support UPMC Hamot received from UPMC in regards to the transition, from the planning stage to the “Big Bang” itself. Long notes “over 300” support people in almost every specialty came to UPMC Hamot – spending weeks to months – to make sure the implementation went smoothly.
