U.S. Health Observatory Presents Live, Anonymous Data from Activity Trackers, Smart Scales

Withings, the leader in the connected health revolution, recently announced the U.S. debut of the Withings Health Institute – an ongoing effort to match research efforts from top thinkers in medicine, fitness and nutrition with the wealth of data gleaned from Withings’ ecosystem of devices to better understand how our choices really impact our health every day. The first project released by the Withings Health Institute is the U.S. Health Observatory – a real-time, web-based dashboard that presents aggregated, anonymous data from Withings connected scales and activity trackers meaningfully: http://obs.withings.com/us.

Holding a mirror up to society

  • For the very first time, the United States health statistics can be monitored in real-time, thanks to data uploaded anonymously from Withings smart scales and activity trackers.
  • The US health observatory allows tracking of sedentary lifestyles (defined as less than 4,000 steps per day on average) and excess weight (Body Mass Index > 25)
  • Users can visualize data at country wide level, or study the breakdown by state, age and gender.
  • Washington DC and New York are the fittest of all states, with the lowest share of sedentary people (respectively 25.1% and 29.3%), as well as the lowest share of people in excess weight (respectively 53.8% and 55.3%).
  • At the other end of the spectrum, mid-western states like North and South Dakota or Arkansas have excess weight rates exceeding 70%, with nearly half of the population of the population are in excess weight, appears like the state with
  • The World Health Organization estimates that nearly 10% of yearly death are caused by sedentary lifestyles and associated risk factors such as obesity. The Withings Observatory is aimed at raising awareness on matters of public health

The Observatory provides a new level of real-time analysis. Weight or inactivity rates can be analyzed along gender, age or regional breakdowns, so as to understand who is most affected by these risk factors, and what might have caused them. According to Angela Chieh, head of the Statistics & Studies Department at Withings "Smart devices are not just about helping people used data to better manage their health. With anonymous and aggregated data, it becomes possible to build public health dashboards that are updated in real time. This is a real asset for public policy makers. We hope this will contribute to the advent of preventive predictive and personalized medicine, including initiating collaborations with the research community. “

"Although physical activity is one of the best natural medicines, this health metric is insufficiently taken into account by public statistics, and thus by the public health policies," says Alexis Normand, head of Withings health activities. "The last official US statistics are from 2010. That was five years ago. Now it’s real time. "

At HIMSS
Representatives from Withings will be available for media inquiries at this week’s Healthcare Information and Management Systems Solutions (HIMSS) Conference; Booth 8127, North Building, Hall B.
