Nicklaus Children's Hospital Wins 2015 Magnet Prize

At the ANCC National Magnet Conference in Atlanta, GA, the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) announced Nicklaus Children's Hospital, a part of Miami Children's Health System, in Miami, Florida, as the winner of the ANCC 2015 Magnet Prize sponsored by Cerner, a global leader in health care technology.

This award recognizes innovative nursing programs and practices in ANCC Magnet-recognized organizations. Cerner encourages cutting-edge nursing programs and practices by sponsoring the $25,000 purse attached to The Magnet Prize. The prize money continues to advance or disseminate the innovation that was selected for The Magnet Prize.

The Magnet Recognition Program recognizes health care organizations that provide the very best in nursing care and uphold the tradition of professional nursing practice. Winning organizations must meet specific criteria such as extraordinary nursing activities that have been sustained over an extended period of time, innovations that are beyond the characteristics of Magnet organizations, and positive outcomes that have been demonstrated and empirically linked to the innovation.

Nicklaus Children's Hospital is recognized for the Humpty Dumpty Falls Prevention Program. Pediatric safety prevention is a focal point of the educational endeavors at Nicklaus Children's Hospital. This facility is a leader in developing a tool to prevent pediatric falls and thereby enhance safety. This fall-prevention program is proven to be an effective tool in the prevention of unintentional injury due to falls and is used around the world.

This program exemplifies nursing excellence and is proven to help nurses deliver high quality health care for patients. The Humpty Dumpty Falls Prevention tool is currently in use in more than 1,150 hospitals around the world, including facilities in all 50 U.S. states, all U.S. military branches and 18 countries situated in six continents.

Nicklaus Children's Hospital, a 289-bed free standing pediatric specialty hospital, earned its first Magnet recognition in 2003. It was re-designated in 2008 and 2013.

In 2002, the ANCC board of directors established The Magnet Prize to encourage the pursuit of excellence. The Magnet Prize recognizes organizations with unique programs where innovative action transforms nursing practice. This award serves as a means for acknowledging peak performance within credentialed Magnet organizations and is the highest honor ANCC bestows within the Magnet community.
