Source: VoiceFirst by Honeywell

Smart, hands-free, two-way, interactive voice solutions have arrived in the healthcare industry, and progressive CIOs are taking the power of voice to the next level – leveraging advances in natural-language voice communication to improve patient care and ascend the HIMSS EMRAM ladder.

Early Voice Technology for Medical Dictation

First-generation speech recognition tools were breakthrough technology when introduced in the healthcare industry in the late 1990s. Used by doctors to quickly dictate diagnostic and exam data, speech recognition and transcription tools saved time and reduced error rates in patient record keeping. These early speech-to-text tools also allowed a more complete capture of physician comments and notes.

The use of speech recognition technology began to replace transcription as doctors embraced automated voice-to-text and continuous speech recognition tools to capture patient data following exams or when reading reports, testing or imaging results. Speech- to-text tools allowed physicians to dictate notes and orders that could then be merged with patient records.
