Noninteroperable health data could have impact on meeting MU Stage 2 criteria

A number of basic difficulties, such as the inability to exchange continuity of care documents as well as lack of a common MPI, could contribute to hospitals and other healthcare facilities failing to meet MU standards.

SearchHealthIT reports a HIMSS Analytics white paper released at HIMSS14 explains, "Noninteroperable health data could obstruct healthcare providers' ability to meet some MU stage 2 criteria, especially pertaining to HIE participation." The white paper, "Current State of Health Data Interoperability in the U.S.: Trends, Challenges and Strategies for Success," was commissioned by Corepoint Health and will be available on February 24.

A press release issued by PRWeb quotes Jon Mertz, vice president of marketing at Corepoint Health, as saying, “Despite frustration over a lack of standardization and readiness of external entities, hospitals are making significant strides toward meeting the government's MU requirements. With the many positive changes unfolding in our healthcare system, hurdles remain. Data exchange is a necessity to gain the next level of efficiency, quality, and patient engagement.

“As we heard from the report, while health IT professionals are frustrated with the progress, they are progressive in finding ways to leverage their IT investments and create a useful, secure exchange patient data." To remedy the common problem of interoperability, "Many hospital executives in the focus group said they are creating their own private, or enterprise-level, HIE to create interoperability among their business partners."

A company called Evolve Exchange  has been able to successfully achieve MU stage 2, as explained by Virtual Strategy Magazine, with their AstralJet v4.1 . "EMR has been certified as a Complete Ambulatory 2014 MU Stage 2 Certified EMR by Drummond Group. Evolve Exchange took their EMR through the process of certification to prove the quality, effectiveness, and strength of its core and Medical Cloud infrastructure. Evolve Exchange's Medical Cloud Infrastructure is designed to enable Interoperability and empower EMR Companies to becomes MU Stage 2 Certified by partnering with them." The article explains that Evolve Exchange's solution "allows a client application to take advantage of their bleeding edge Cloud Infrastructure."
