Jackson, MI (PRWEB)

Midbrook Medical, the Jackson, MI, based manufacturer of custom fabricated medical equipment and decontamination systems has introduced several new products designed to help hospitals deal with the growing problem of healthcare acquired infections (HAIs). The Tempest washer, MediCount ATP Testing System and antimicrobial copper fabrications can help limit the spread of these potentially deadly infections.

There is a growing concern in the healthcare community regarding healthcare acquired infections as studies continue to produce disturbing statistics showing their high cost, in terms of both unreimbursed dollars and patient lives. Unfortunately, this growing concern is not accompanied by an increase in equipment available to help facilities counter the spread of HAIs. Education is important, but the healthcare industry needs additional assistance to deal with this threat. Midbrook Medical has now addressed that issue with the introduction of several different products specifically designed to help healthcare personnel better protect themselves and their patients.

Midbrook has been in the cleaning industry for nearly 30 years, and is intimately familiar with what is involved in washing difficult to clean parts. Recently, Midbrook has taken this knowledge and worked with a leading university teaching and research hospital to develop an automated cleaning process for cannulated surgical instruments. These instruments are among the most difficult to adequately clean, and are a serious threat to transfer infection between patients. The result of Midbrook's efforts is the Tempest washer, which uses a combination of digital ultrasonic agitation and power flushing of the interior lumen with enzymatic detergent to clean cannulated instruments to the point that they can be sterilized.

Along with the Tempest, Midbrook Medical has also introduced the MediCount ATP Testing System. This handheld unit measures adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the chemical substance that powers reactions within cells. A high amount of ATP on a surface indicates the presence of potentially harmful bacteria. The MediCount is used to test the amount of ATP on a surface, and provide an easy to read result. This result can then be placed into the software program included with the unit, allowing personnel to track results over time and easily identify problem areas that could be sources of infection.

Finally, Midbrook Medical is also the only custom sheet metal fabrication company in the United States with the EPA certifications necessary to work with and form products made from antimicrobial copper alloys. Including antimicrobial copper alloy in touch surfaces such as the tops of carts and tables, bedrails, door handles, and other items can drastically reduce the amount of HAI causing bacteria* that patients and employees are exposed to, reducing the risk of infection transfer.

Midbrook Medical hopes that the Tempest, MediCount ATP Testing System and antimicrobial copper fabrications will help curb the spread of life threatening HAIs in healthcare facilities. By including these products in their infection control programs, facilities can minimize the risk of transferring infections between patients and avoid the high cost and bad publicity associated with them.

*Laboratory testing shows that, when cleaned regularly, Antimicrobial Copper kills greater than 99.9% of the following bacteria within 2 hours of exposure: MRSA, VRE, Staphylococcus aureus, Enterobacteraerogenes, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and E. coli O157:H7. Antimicrobial Copper surfaces are a supplement to and not a substitute for standard infection control practices and have been shown to reduce microbial contamination, but do not necessarily prevent cross contamination; users must continue to follow all current infection control practices.
