Manage Mobility And Be HIPAA Compliant

Like many facilities, Montrose Memorial Hospital has leveraged mobile computing technology to improve efficiency for clinicians and outcomes for patients. The not-for-profit, 75-bed regional medical center in Montrose, CO, has deployed a mix of mobile carts, tablet computers, and smartphones in both clinical and nonclinical operations, from the nursing and radiology departments to food service and administration.

Employee-owned mobile devices like smart- phones are also used throughout the hospital, but these devices presented a challenge to administrators and the IT department. HIPAA regulations require strict control over how patient data is accessed and transmitted, but personal mobile devices could allow staff to access hospital e-mail and other systems, resulting in potential HIPAA violations.

“As more and more smart devices were coming into the organization, I wanted to be able to secure those devices from exposing any patient healthcare information that could potentially put us at risk for a HIPAA violation,” says Carlos Lovera, director of information technology at Montrose Memorial.
