MacPractice 4.3 Launches, Bringing First-Ever HIE Interoperability To The Mac Platform For Medical Professionals

Latest Edition Uses HL7 Protocol to Connect with HIEs across the MacPractice Desktop and Mobile Ecosystem; First HIE Integration Launches with New York University Medical Center

MacPractice, the leading Apple developer of practice management and clinical software for doctors’ offices that use Macs, iPhones and iPads, today announced the launch of MacPractice 4.3, the first Mac-native platform to offer Health Information Exchange (HIE) interoperability across the entire desktop and mobile practice management and clinical ecosystem.

New York University Medical Center’s HIE is the first system to interoperate with the new edition, which uses industry-standard HL7 messaging protocol to connect with and share data across regional, statewide and independent health care system HIEs. With HIE interoperability, MacPractice 4.3 enables physicians already using the platform to meet the HIE mandates of partnering hospitals while continuing to use the Mac OS-based platform.

“As a longtime user of MacPractice, the addition of HIE interoperability enables me to maintain a state-of-the-art practice management solution that integrates seamlessly with NYUMC’s HIE without having to replace my entire system,” said Alec S. Goldenberg, M.D., a hematology and medical oncology specialist at NYU Langone Medical Center. “Now, the entire MacPractice ecosystem provides a future-proof solution to maximize practice efficiency, reduce data entry errors and improve quality of care for patients.”

For doctors looking to implement an HIE-compatible system, MacPractice 4.3 meets both the HL7 standard and federal guidelines for interoperability as part of the requirements for the demonstration of Meaningful Use Stage 2 under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).

“HIEs are gaining momentum across the country as states and private companies recognize the improvements in patient care and operational efficiency these patient information exchanges provide,” said MacPractice CEO Mark Hollis. “But, many have faced implementation challenges and even a few failures, underscoring the difficulty of integration across multiple disparate technologies and platforms. MacPractice 4.3 overcomes those challenges, providing physicians at NYU Medical Center at first with interoperability and flexibility they need to meet the evolving HIE landscape, both on the Mac desktop and iOS for iPhone and iPad.”

MacPractice 4.3 also includes functional enhancements to improve charting, third-party digital radiography and other features for the entire practice management and clinical suite that includes MacPractice MD for physicians, DDS for dentists, DC for chiropractors and 20/20 for eye specialists. The upgrade is compatible with both the MacPractice core desktop application, as well as the latest December updates of the iEHR, Clipboard and Patient CheckIn companion iPad apps. Upgrading to MacPractice 4.3 is free for current users, with an additional fee for the HL7 HIE interoperability interface.

The MacPractice ecosystem consists of MacPractice on Mac OS and native and web-developed Apps designed for iOS, which include Patient Check-In for iPad, MacPractice Clipboard for iPad and MacPractice iEHR for iPad.

The MacPractice suite leverages Apple’s legendary ease of use, stability and low-cost maintenance to create affordable, intuitive and flexible Mac-native software for doctors. The software, currently used by 15,000 providers, combines a state-of-the-art ONC-ATCB 2011-2012 Certified EHR/EMR solution with practice management tools in an easy-to-use, intuitive system that can improve patient care, efficiency and productivity.
