Digitalization in the healthcare industry requires a transition to flexible storage and data management. With digitalization, hospitals can have access to patient data from the time of patient intake and diagnosis to bedside care to the archiving of medical records. These organizations need a high-performance IT infrastructure that is reliable and flexible.
The more scattered the data management and the more applications there are to host and oversee, the more complex and cost-intensive management and operations will be. Storage and data management play a key role here.
Daniel Abweser, director of the Data Processing Center of Logicare AG, is responsible for the IT infrastructure for four hospitals. He is in charge of setting up the storage structure as efficiently as possible and must set the course for the future. "We have the classic situation where, since the conversion to a picture archiving and communication system, clinical information system (CIS), and other healthcare appli- cations, each new patient results in large amounts of new medical data, which must be saved, securely stored, and managed," he says. "The numerous servers with local storage and more than 120 applications obviously created a need to optimize costs, management, and resource use."
The reorganization of the existing direct-attached storage not only had to bring more flexibility and simplification; it also needed to relieve the time pressure during backup and create the basis for further consolidation of servers and applications.
