Landstuhl Regional Medical Center Uses Speech Recognition To Improve Hospital Operations And Reduce Costs
This case study from Nuance takes a look at Landstuhl Post, a permanent U.S. Military installation located in the German State of Rheinland-Pfalz which is home to the largest American hospital outside of the United States, Landstuhl Regional Medical Center (LRMH). The hospital is the only tertiary American hospital in Europe, providing care for more than 300,00 American military personnel and their families.
LRMC was actively looking for tools to help reduce hospital overhead and increase the efficiency of the medical staff. The case study notes, “Lieutenant Colonel Mike Fravell, CIO of LRMC, knew speech recognition technology had come of age and could deliver the savings he was looking for.” LRMC chose Dragon Medical to handle their transcriptions, eliminating the need for external transcription services which are stated to cost between $25,000 and $35,000 for each physician based on recent studies.
According to Fravell, “We selected Dragon Medical based on the accuracy and speed with which our physicians can document clinical notes, and the proven cost savings that we know speech recognition delivers.”
