Lake Health's Tripoint Medical Center Deploys TVRC's Interactive Patient Services Solution

TVR Communications (TVRC), the largest U.S. provider of interactive patient services and entertainment products, announces that Lake Health has deployed its ADM-based patient services solution at the brand-new 119-bed TriPoint Medical Center in Concord, Ohio.

"When Lake Health began designing state-of-the-art, digital hospital five years ago, we envisioned a technologically advanced facility that offers holistic, integrated patient- and family-centered care," said Cathy Murch, MLIS, AHIP, the project manager for the TVRC implementation. "Based on evidence that relaxation reduces pain and stress, we designed the whole facility—from the colors to the private patient rooms—around relaxation."

An integral piece of TriPoint Medical Center's relaxation theme includes interactive content and applications from TVRC on patient television sets. For instance, Lake strategically chose relaxation videos from TVRC partner Medcalm. This mind-calming content has been proven to reduce patient stress, create a sense of well-being, and promote the body's ability to heal.

In collaboration with TVRC, TriPoint also launched a unique digital arts channel that highlights pieces from local artists.

"The art is meant for reflective purposes," Murch explained. "It is not a quick revolving slide show, but rather a slowly changing pattern designed to promote relaxation."

Lake Health also chose a variety of patient education and entertainment videos, including content from Injoy and Milner Fenwick, as well as dozens of movies. Other applications that improve patients' hospital stay include a service request option, a Games4TV gaming solution, and a patient discharge application.

The hospital began implementing TVRC's solution during the first week of June 2009, and the system went live on the hospital's opening day October 21, 2009. Throughout the process, TVRC's project development team worked with a multi-disciplinary committee from Lake Health that included the VP of Nursing and members of the hospital's marketing, patient education, research services, patient registration, and IT departments.

Samir Batra, TVRC Director of Business Development and Strategy, reports that TriPoint patients have highly utilized the relaxation videos. Usage data shows that there were more than 1100 viewings of Medcalm relaxation content from opening day October 21st 2009 through February 21st of 2010. The large usage of relaxation content has resulted in a rate of over 14 viewings per day. This is a testament to the hard work Tripoint Medical Center patient care staff is doing in helping ease patient concerns and creating a relaxing and caring environment Phase II enhancements will include other applications that improve patient satisfaction, such as: a "send a compliment" application, which allows patients to recognize nursing staff, physicians, and support staff; and a welcome message, which will feature an executive highlighting the facility's mission. Tripoint Medical Center is reviewing utilizing TVRC's Process Advisory Services (PAS) group to assist them in deploying the phase II enhancements. PAS would help drive utilization of the interactive patient services solutions through additional training and implementing complementary best-practice processes.
