Big Bend Hospice leverages Allscripts Platform for better patient outcomes and financial considerations

Big Bend Hospice, of Tallahassee, Florida, has chosen Allscripts Homecare software to improve its clinical quality of care, financial performance, and operational control. The implementation will enable the nonprofit agency to focus on care delivery and outcomes for its patients as well as support for family members.

Big Bend Hospice sought a software solution that would integrate its complex business needs with the availability of critical clinical information in a home setting, even in rural areas where internet access is limited. “We chose Allscripts Homecare for its reliability, ease-of-use, and its ability to integrate across platforms," said Cathy Adkison, chief executive officer of Big Bend Hospice. "Our ability to deliver the best possible care for patients relies on the efficiency and reliability of our IT systems. Allscripts provides an economical solution that helps us more easily manage our patients and our evolving operational needs."

Allscripts Homecare solution combines business, clinical, and scheduling capabilities for improved productivity. Hospice patient records are organized to provide clinicians with care plans and other clinical data. And the Homecare platform facilitates expedient reimbursements to satisfy financial pressures. Big Bend Hospice is combining this technology with Allscripts AllDocs solution, for paperless workflows with electronic forms.

"Big Bend Hospice is an exciting new relationship for Allscripts," said Martha Thorne, general manager, performance & care logistics at Allscripts. "Big Bend chose Allscripts over our competitors because Allscripts Homecare is a comprehensive and integrated solution that improves homecare and hospice financial performance, improves operations and, most importantly, helps our clients improve the quality of care for patients."

Serving an eight-county area in northwestern Florida for the past 30 years, Big Bend Hospice is staffed by more than 200 employees and 400 volunteers. The agency provides individualized healthcare, medications, equipment, and supplies to people with life limiting illnesses, and additionally focuses on the compassion and encouragement needed for these patients to reach goals and attain peace of mind. Accredited by Community Health Accreditation Program (CHAP), Big Bend Hospice provides care in the patient’s home, nursing home or assisted living facility, in a hospital, or in the agency’s Hospice House, a 12-bed short-term crisis care facility. The hospice organization served more than 3700 patients in 2012, offering 24-hour support, counseling, and comfort to limited life expectant patients and their families.
