INFINITT Supports Strategies For Virtualizing PACS For Healthcare IT Environments

INFINITT North America, an advanced technology company setting new standards in image and information management, is once again raising the bar for its competitors.

"In the last year, reported Infinitt President, David Smarro, 30% of our customers replacing legacy PACS and RIS have implemented these systems on a virtualized server platform.

One of our largest virtualization implementations to date is St. Joseph's Healthcare System (SJHS) in Paterson, New Jersey, but we even have small community hospitals choosing to virtualize their PACS infrastructure. With three hospitals and two imaging centers depending on the Infinitt PACS, SJHS chose to virtualize their primary and backup data centers. The virtualized solution proposed by INFINITT ensures high availability because it provides built-in failover protection and zero-downtime server maintenance.

"Without virtualization, it would have been difficult to meet SJHS' 99.99% uptime requirement," says Smarro. "You couldn't re-boot a server in the time allowed by their definition of uptime."

A virtualization specialist at INFINITT explained that virtual environments isolate the software from the hardware. "Before, if we had a serious hardware failure, it could potentially bring down the entire server. With virtualization, even if multiple servers fail, we can do maintenance and trouble-shooting on the hardware with no effect on operations. We can pull a piece of hardware and it's transparent to the user."

"Having been live for over 18 months now, I can decidedly state that this was the right direction and the system has operated as promised," says Jim Cavanagh, VP and Chief Information Officer of SJHS. "INFINITT has met their uptime (and performance) commitments each month, even as we approach 300,000 annual studies on the platform. We have come to realize the benefits of virtualizing our servers and virtualization has become part of our strategic technology development plan."

INFINITT will be exhibiting at the Health Information & Management Systems Society (HIMSS) Annual Meeting in Orlando, February 21-23, 2011, and welcomes IT directors/CIO's to come by the Infinitt booth (#4982) to discuss their own virtualization strategies.
