For the past decade, Field2Base has helped healthcare businesses digitize patient forms, improve backend data archiving, and streamline processes. Working for a company that produces such capable software, I’ve been somewhat spoiled by the immediacy of paper free forms. Just thinking of filling out something on paper nowadays feels like a mild inconvenience, and the drag it has on businesses is exponentially higher.
A series of unfortunate events.
Recently, I fell down a flight of stairs in my home subsequently breaking my left big toe and suffering from minor bruises over most of my body. I sought out medical attention shortly thereafter and arrived early for my appointment. But it was very clear that the new patient process was going to be a callous shift from what I’d grown used to at Field2Base.

I was handed a clipboard with around 10 pages of the typical paperwork and a manila folder with other notices and advertising. I took the roughly 3 pounds of paper back to my seat and began scribbling away. In the next 20 minutes, I witnessed three employees stop what they were doing to shuffle, staple, stick, and compile stacks of papers for manual archiving. Seeing all of this led me to believe that these wonderful employees were required to spend many hours of their day collecting, correcting, mailing, and archiving this paperwork.
I eventually saw a doctor and received the medical attention I sought, which meant the next step was to close out my medical bill. The office allowed you to use your debit card like normal, but to my surprise, the billing process had an electronic option via an online kiosk. My sudden exuberance at the sight of a technical solution slowly turned into bitterness as I struggled through the clunky UI. The unaligned buttons mocked my every press, doing everything on a delay or nothing at all. Then I discovered I hadn’t entered my birthday in the format it wanted which caused the kiosk to pause for 10 seconds, wiped all my information and displayed, “Error with Birth Date.” My disappointment could not be overstated as I left the kiosk and paid the front desk directly instead of dealing with the extra hassle.
Doctor offices don’t have to operate this way, right?
