Einstein Medical Center’s implementation of radiology decision support system expected to reduce unnecessary radiation exposure and costs

Einstein Medical Center Philadelphia has selected MedCurrent’s OrderRight Radiology Decision Support system to assist clinicians in ordering diagnostic tests that are appropriate for each patient. The implementation integrates with Cerner Corporation’s Millennium EMR ordering system and will improve patient care by reducing unnecessary radiation exposure and costs, particularly in instances where radiology tests are not needed.

As Einstein’s physicians order tests, information contained within the patient’s EMR will trigger OrderRight’s clinical rule sets with rationale to provide patient-specific recommendations. “Utilizing OrderRight is consistent with our strategy to optimize data and technology in clinical decision making and management,” said Terence Matalon, M.D., chief of radiology at Einstein Medical Center Philadelphia. “In addition, it supports the impending regulatory changes that focus on quality outcomes and reduced costs.”

Along with ACR Select, OrderRight’s clinical rule sets, the system’s Rule Authoring Studio will allow officials at Einstein to customize those rule sets to adapt to local needs and standards of practice. Also contained within OrderRight is the Data Analytics module, which will enable the organization to review ordering behaviors and rule compliance to ensure appropriate ordering, review, and action. “We chose OrderRight because of its physician-intuitive design, ability to customize rule sets, its post-ordering analytics, and its deep integration with our EMR,” continued Matalon.

MedCurrent’s solutions are designed to provide decision support for physicians at the point of care to ensure test appropriateness, cost containment, and improved patient outcomes. “We are honored that such a prestigious organization such as Einstein Healthcare Network has entrusted MedCurrent with such an important aspect of their care,” said Brent Norton, M.D., MedCurrent CEO. “Having OrderRight integrated into their Cerner EMR will ensure easy adoption by their ordering physicians, a key success factor in successfully employing decision support.”

Einstein Healthcare Network, serving Philadelphia and Montgomery County, PA, is a private nonprofit integrated network of three hospitals, rehabilitation and behavioral centers, outpatient facilities, and 500 primary care physicians and specialists.
