HP Helping Cambridge University Hospitals Transform To Digital Hospital

$210M agreement will help UK NHS Foundation Trust use mobile and data management technologies to improve patient care

HP Enterprise Services UK Ltd. recently announced it is helping Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (CUH) transform the way it delivers care.

The $210M, 10-year agreement supports CUH’s eHospital program, which is the next step on the healthcare provider’s journey to become a true digital hospital by enabling more efficient, effective clinical decisions as well as improving overall quality of patient safety and care.

Under the terms of the agreement, HP will work with CUH to create a secure, robust, integrated IT environment that allows clinical staff to access a unified view of each patient’s clinical and administrative information via its new electronic patient record system.

The transformation will enable CUH to devote more resources to patient care, improve the holistic view of the patient experience and deliver more effective, reliable patient care. At the same time, it will help the staff work more efficiently and further improve safety.

“This is the most significant decision the hospital has made in recent times, and one which is incredibly exciting and will help transform the way we deliver care to our patients,” said Dr. Keith McNeil, chief executive, Cambridge University Hospitals. “eHospital is about putting our patients—their outcomes and safety—first, always. We cannot continue to deliver the highest quality of compassionate care to our patients unless we invest in IT systems to transform our services. Our patients will see significant benefits as we will be able to care for them in a safer and more effective way, spend more time with them and, very importantly, they will be much more involved in their own care. All in all, the new computer system will make life simpler for staff and safer for patients; eHospital will make the right thing the easy thing to do.

HP will provide Enterprise Applications Hosting, Network Management, HP WorkPlace 360 services and other infrastructure services to create a consistent, scalable, secure foundation for CUH’s transformation. HP will host and operate CUH’s new electronic patient record system, along with other hospital software applications, from secure HP data centers in the UK.

CUH’s clinical staff will now have secure, role-based bedside access to a complete view of each patient’s information, including vital patient test results, history and images, and related medical research. Tablet, handheld and other mobile devices, including clinicians’ own, will be used to access, report and communicate critical information to help staff make more informed decisions faster, allowing them to spend more time with patients rather than behind computers.

HP also will refresh CUH’s printing environment by digitizing and streamlining document-intensive processes to improve workflows in areas such as admissions, medical records and nursing stations.

“When dealing with human lives, technology should be an enabler rather than a roadblock,” said Howard Hughes, senior vice president and general manager, Enterprise Services—Europe, Middle East and Africa, HP. “This Trust is already at the forefront of innovative patient treatment, and now the HP team will combine its healthcare expertise with proven solutions to build a robust infrastructure to support the hospitals’ high standards of clinical excellence and improve patient outcomes.”

HP has provided patient administration and departmental systems to CUH since 1995. More recently, HP provided CUH its secure and scalable infrastructure as a service.

HP’s premier Americas client event, HP Discover, takes place June 11-13 in Las Vegas.
