White Paper: HIPAA Compliance And Mobile Devices: Securing And Protecting ePHI

This white paper explores two areas of concern that HHS (Health and Human Services) will review during a compliance audit: remote access of ePHI and remote storage of ePHI (electroinic protected health information).

Concerned by high profile security breaches involving electronic Protected Health Information (ePHI), and driven by the recent expansion of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Security Rule by the HITECH act, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is refocusing its auditing activities that target covered healthcare entities and business associates.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), which until recently enforced the HIPAA Security Rule, published the "HIPAA Security Guidance for Remote Use of and Access to Electronic Protected Health Information" to help organizations determine the best way to protect ePHI available to mobile users running BlackBerry, iPhone, iPad, Android and other mobile devices. Many of their key suggestions are outlined in this White Paper along with the BoxTone Enterprise Mobility Management features that best support their recommendations.
