HIMSS Announces 2014 Award And Scholarship Recipients

Honorees will be formally recognized at the HIMSS Award Gala to be held during the 2015 HIMSS Annual Conference & Exhibition in April.

The Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) has announced the recipients of its scholarships and awards for 2014. Winners are nominated in four categories: industry service, HIMSS service, publications, and chapters. The organization handed out more than 10 awards for excellence with winners coming from a variety of occupations, including engineering, nursing, and academia.

The organization also announced the 2014 scholarship recipients. Foundation scholarships were given to awardees in undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs. Chapter-sponsored scholarships were also awarded. Several recipients are highlighted below. For a complete listing of honorees, please click here.

Sue Schade, MBA, FCHIME, FHIMSS, has been presented with the CHIME-HIMSS John E. Gall Jr./CIO of the Year Award. Schade is the Chief Information Officer for the University of Michigan (UM) Hospitals and Health Centers. Her career at UM began in 2012, when she was brought in to oversee the launch of the organization’s new electronic health system. Schade’s career in the health IT industry spans 30 years, 15 of which have been as a CIO. The CHIME-HIMSS John E. Gall Jr./CIO of the Year Award goes to the CIO who has best demonstrated qualities of leadership in healthcare, as determined by the Board of Directors of the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives and the Board of Directors of Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society.

William Hersh, MD, FACP, FACMI, has received the Physician IT Leadership Award. Dr. Hersh is Professor and Chair, Department of Medical Informatics & Clinical Epidemiology, Oregon Health & Science University. The Physician IT Leadership Award is presented to an individual who, in the judgment of the Board of Directors, has demonstrated significant leadership in applying IT to the needs of physicians and thereby serving the Society and/or the industry.

Michelle R. Troseth, MSN, RN, DPNAP, FAAN, has received the Nursing Informatics Leadership Award. Troseth is Chief Professional Practice Officer at Elsevier Clinical Solutions. The Nursing Informatics Leadership Award is given to an individual who, in the judgment of the HIMSS Board of Directors, has demonstrated significant leadership in the area of Nursing Informatics within the Society and/or the industry.

James Brady, PhD, MEd, CISSP, CISM, CRISC, PMP, CPHIMS, FHIMSS, received the Distinguished Fellows Service Award. Brady is Area CIO at Kaiser Permanente Orange County, where he oversees the information systems for the 262-bed Anaheim and 150-bed Irvine Medical Centers, 22 medical offices, 960 physicians, 6,400 employees, and over 468,000 health plan members. The Distinguished Fellows Service Award recognizes a HIMSS Fellow Member who has been in good standing for at least two years who has made commendable and long-standing contributions to the Society.

Chapter of the Year Awards were given to one small, one medium, and one large chapter of HIMSS. Nebraska was honored with the Small Chapter Award, Arizona won the Medium Chapter Award, and Southern California was given the Large Chapter Award.
