HIMSS Analytics Honors Beaumont Hospital Troy With Stage 7 Award And Associated Clinics With Stage 7 Ambulatory Awards

The HIMSS Stage 7 Awards honors facilities operating in a paperless environment and representing best practices in implementing EHR.

HIMSS Analytics awarded Beaumont Hospital Troy in Troy, Mich., with Stage 7 Awards, and 144 Beaumont Health System ambulatory clinics with Stage 7 Ambulatory Awards.

Stage 7 Award: HIMSS Analytics developed the EMR Adoption Model in 2005 as a methodology for evaluating the progress and impact of electronic medical record systems for hospitals in the HIMSS Analytics Database. There are eight stages (0-7) that measure a hospital’s implementation and utilization of information technology applications. The final stage, Stage 7, represents an advanced patient record environment. The validation process to confirm a hospital has reached Stage 7 includes a site visit by an executive from HIMSS Analytics and former or current chief information officers to ensure an unbiased evaluation of the Stage 7 environments.

Stage 7 Ambulatory Award: Developed in 2011, the EMR Ambulatory Adoption Model provides a methodology for evaluating the progress and impact of electronic medical record systems for ambulatory facilities owned by hospitals in the HIMSS Analytics Database. These facilities include physician practices, clinics, outpatient centers and specialty clinics. Tracking their progress in completing eight stages (0-7), ambulatory facilities can review the implementation and use of IT applications with the intent of reaching Stage 7, which represents an advanced electronic patient record environment.

During the third quarter of 2014, only 3.4 percent of the more than 5,400 U.S. hospitals in the HIMSS Analytics Database received the Stage 7 Award, and only 4.37 percent of the more than 27,000 ambulatory clinics in the HIMSS Analytics Database received the Stage 7 Ambulatory Award.

“Implementing an EHR is a journey, and the HIMSS Analytics Stage 7 designation is a true acknowledgement of the success of that journey for Beaumont Health System, said Karie Lyon, vice president, information technology. “This implementation was one of the best examples of true partnership between Beaumont IT and our clinicians and leaders. We are extremely proud of our clinicians in their adoption of technology and continued pursuit of excellence on behalf of our patients.”

Beaumont Health System is a three-hospital regional health system with 1,778 licensed beds, more than 20,200 employees and 3,100 physicians, including 553 employed physicians in the Beaumont Medical Group and more than 2,500 private-practice physicians. In addition to its hospitals in Royal Oak, Troy and Grosse Pointe, Beaumont has 54 community-based sites of care including medical centers in Oakland, Macomb and Wayne counties, family practice and internal medicine practices, five nursing centers, home care services and hospice. Beaumont Health System recently announced an affiliation with two local healthcare systems to form Beaumont Health.

“The Beaumont Health clinics we visited are among the most paperless Stage 7 clinics I’ve seen. We found only one piece of paper, and it will not be long before that paper disappears,” said John Daniels, CNM, FACHE, FHIMSS, CPHIMS, vice president, strategic relations, HIMSS. “Also, they launched a PT/OT optimization project that has not only reduced the average length of stay for ICU patients by 3.2 days, but has also increased revenue by over $780,000 per year.”

The Beaumont Health System will be recognized at the 2015 Annual HIMSS Conference & Exhibition on April 12-16, 2015, in Chicago, Ill.
