Geneva Healthcare Begins System-Wide Implementation At Sharp HealthCare

The Geneva Healthcare Suite will be used by San Diego’s leading integrated regional health care delivery system in all four of its emergency departments

Geneva Healthcare recently announced that Sharp HealthCare will begin using The Geneva Healthcare Suite, an innovative technology platform for managing data from cardiac devices, in all four of its emergency departments at its acute care hospitals. The platform will be used to access and organize cardiac device data from every patient who arrives at the emergency department with a cardiac device like a pacemaker or defibrillator. The suite’s intuitive dashboard makes life-saving information available immediately to all clinicians so that they can make informed treatment decisions. Sharp HealthCare signed a multiyear, system-wide contract to ensure The Geneva Healthcare Suite is available in all Sharp hospital emergency departments

“This platform solves a critical problem we have every day:  patients with implanted cardiac devices are forced to wait hours for representatives from the device manufacturers to arrive and process data from the device. A patient can wait hours just to understand the status of their device,” said Paul Patchen, Vice President of Sharp HealthCare’s Cardiovascular Service Line. “With The Geneva Healthcare Suite, our own staff can understand the data instantly and begin making critical decisions about the patient’s care.”

A study published in the Academic Emergency Medicine Journal proved that The Geneva Healthcare Suite cuts emergency room wait times an average of 92 minutes.  The platform allows emergency department operators to efficiently access a patient’s cardiac device data, use that information at the point of care and immediately make this information accessible to the most qualified clinician wherever they are.

This contract follows the success of a pilot program in the emergency department at Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center. During the six-month pilot, The Geneva Healthcare Suite was used to access data from all patients with cardiac devices who arrived in the emergency department, the operating room and the Douglas & Nancy Barnhart Cancer Center, located on the Sharp Chula Vista campus. Sharp staff used The Geneva Healthcare Suite to collect data from more than six hundred patients in that time and they found 14 patients with dead batteries and eight patients with dangerous lead fractures. In addition, using The Geneva Healthcare Suite significantly reduced the wait time for those patients with cardiac devices.

“This tool allows our physicians and nurses to assess and diagnose patients with implanted cardiac devices much more rapidly and efficiently, and it enables us to identify potential problems before they become serious,” said Pablo Velez, CEO of Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center. “The result has been improved care for our patients, which is always our number one priority.”
