In 2009, the HHS transitioned HIPAA EDI standards to ASC X12 Version 5010. Version 5010 was designed to support the International Classification of Diseases, 10th Edition diagnosis and procedure codes (ICD-10). ICD-10 will increase the number of codes from 14,000 to nearly 70,000. This coding system was scheduled to take effect in October 2013.
