CMS has updated its Meaningful Use data and found strong participation and hopeful success rates

CMS has updated information on Meaningful Use participation and success in 2013. The report, EHR Incentive Programs Data Brief, reveals positive results for the MU program. Health Data Management writes that CMS reports, “Ninety-three percent of eligible hospitals have registered for the program, along with 82 percent of eligible professionals. More than 107,000 eligible professionals have received a Medicaid EHR payment and 221,000 got a Medicare payment. The Medicare eligible professional attestation success rate was 99.9 percent.”

Eligible professionals are surpassing MU objectives according to CMS. iHealth Beat summarized the findings on eligible professionals in 2013, noting:

  • 97.7 percent of eligible professionals provided electronic copies of health information
  • 97.2 percent kept an active patient medication list
  • 96.6 percent maintained a medication allergy list
  • 92.5 percent provided transition of care summaries
  • 92.6 percent provided active medication reconciliation lists
  • 82.4 percent kept clinical summaries

Other objectives that have been surpassed include E-Copy of Health Information (50 percent threshold, 97 percent actual), Office Visit Summaries (50 percent threshold, 81 percent actual) and Timely Electronic Access (10 percent threshold, 75 percent actual).

Data regarding eligible hospitals is also positive with many having reached core objectives:

  • 98.1 percent of eligible hospitals maintained a medication allergy list
  • 98 percent kept an active medication list
  • 96.9 percent recorded patient demographics
  • 95.6 percent recorded advance directives
  • 95.6 percent included clinical lab results in EHR data
  • 92.3 percent recorded vital signs
  • 83.5 percent maintained a computerized provider order entry system

“More than 334,000 providers have received payment for participating in the Medicare and Medicaid EHR Incentive Programs. Even more exciting, of the more than 215,288 Medicare eligible professionals that had attested at the time of analysis in 2013, 215,075 were successful— a 99.9 percent success rate. We are looking forward to this year, and hope to continue seeing these positive trends in EHR Incentive Programs participation,” notes a release on the CMS website.
