Bedside Medication Verification And Administration Objectives Make Cart Selection Critical To Success

Implementing MEDITECH EMR software including eMAR, Bedside Med Verification (BMV), CPOE, and other clinical modules. Beginning with eMAR and BMV, Bella Vista is building the foundation to create a “fully digital” hospital environment that leverages today’s technology to improve healthcare delivery and patient outcomes.

Three (3) primary objectives were identified by Bella Vista Hospital as part of the project. 

1. Mobilize and integrate EHR software with the medication administration process at the point of care
2. Improve workflow efficiency to provide more time for clinical care at bedside
3. Improve medication safety and security

Bella Vista Hospital evaluated many ‘standard’ systems including wall cabinets with PCs and medication bins, decentralized medication dispensing cabinets, and even investigated creating their own mobile workstation to mobilize hardware and software. It was decided the best solution to pursue was a fully-integrated medication cart that featured individual patient bins, drawer storage, and a sophisticated security system. More than anything, Bella Vista knew that cart configurability would be paramount in deciding which vendor they selected.

Among the results realized at Bella Vista were:

• Optimized use and benefits of using clinical software at the point of care
• Created a closed-loop medication administration and clinical process
• Improved medication safety and security
