Appalachian expects Allscripts’ Sunrise Clinical Manager to aid in care coordination and more

The Appalachian Regional Healthcare System, serving the mountainous region known as the “High Country” of northwest North Carolina and northeast Tennessee, recently implemented Sunrise Clinical Manager (SCM), an Electronic Health Record (EHR) system from Allscripts Healthcare Solutions. The solution is expected to aid Appalachian in care coordination, connectivity, and graphical interface of electronic medical records.

The largest healthcare system in the region, Appalachian’s network includes three hospitals, a physician practice management group, and a healthcare foundation. Watauga Medical Center, in Boone, NC, is a 117-bed regional medical complex with centers for cardiology, sleep, wound care, wellness, rehabilitation, home health, pain management, and health education. Blowing Rock Hospital of Blowing Rock, NC, is a 72-bed skilled nursing center and includes the Davant Extended Care and Rehabilitation Center. And Cannon Memorial Hospital, a 25-bed acute Critical Access Hospital with 10-bed inpatient behavioral health center, is located in Linville, NC. Appalachian is further comprised of the Appalachian Regional Medical Associates (ARMA) with, at present, 10 medical practices and is supported by the Appalachian Regional Healthcare Foundation, dedicated to ensuring quality healthcare for the High Country through the use of advanced resources and technologies.

According to Claire Cline, Senior Vice President, Patient Care Services/CNO of Appalachian, “Implementing the Allscripts EHR system is one of the greatest clinical transformations our organization – and the nursing department specifically – has undergone. We now have electronic patient information at each of our acute care facilities which can be shared between the patient’s healthcare providers.”  Indeed, after one week, more than 40 physicians had entered more than 2,100 orders into the SCM system at the Watauga and Cannon locations.

Allscripts provides solutions for EHR, practice management, clinical, revenue cycle, connectivity, and information. Sunrise Computerized Provider Order Entry (CPOE), Sunrise Acute Care, Sunrise Critical Care, Sunrise Emergency Care, Sunrise Pharmacy, Sunrise Knowledge-Based Medication Administration for Acute, Sunrise Mobile MD (on iPhone and iPad), and Sunrise Clinical Analytics and Clinician Portal are all being utilized by Appalachian. These solutions will help Appalachian to better “connect the dots between its facilities, improving care coordination,” says Paul M. Black, President and CEO of Allscripts.
