Fetal surveillance system to provide real-time access to automated assessments of labor progress and fetal heart rate patterns

St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center, of Syracuse, NY, has chosen PeriCALM Tracings, an advanced perinatal system from PeriGen, to provide real-time, automated assessments of fetal heart rate patterns and labor progress in its labor and delivery unit. This clinical decision support tool is expected to enhance mother and baby care by increasing patient safety and reducing risk and errors.

The only facility in central New York to be designated a Baby Friendly Hospital by the World Health Organization, St. Joseph’s is a 431-bed general medical and surgical health center that serves a 16-county area. Delivering approximately 1,900 babies per year, the hospital houses its Level III Intensive Care Nursery on the same floor as Labor and Delivery, Mother Baby Unit, and The Birthplace, a homelike setting for low-risk deliveries. The health system also includes a broad range of primary care centers, surgery centers, mental health programs, home health care, college of nursing, and residency programs and was named one of the nation’s “100 Most Wired” hospitals by Hospitals & Health Networks.

St. Joseph’s officials’ selected PeriCALM Tracings after observing the interface of the fetal surveillance system with Epic’s enterprise-wide EHR at another PeriGen hospital customer’s test environment. The two systems seamlessly interface fetal strip data with patient information, and allow secure single sign-on. “We were impressed by the level of integration we saw with Epic,” said Marty Mulderig, director of Information Services at St. Joseph’s Hospital. “Most importantly, PeriCALM Tracings’ advanced fetal surveillance helps us maintain the high standard of care we are recognized for in our community.”

PeriCALM Tracings automatically calculates Montevideo units, and with a split screen, shows both the mother’s and baby’s heart rate and provides current status as well as trends over time. “With its complexities, resource demands, and emergent situations, obstetrics is an area where clinicians and patients benefit significantly from having advanced technology immediately accessible at the bedside,” said Matthew Sappern, CEO of PeriGen. “We are thrilled to be working with St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center and to be part of their commitment to improving the quality of OB care.”
