ACOs And Health Information Technology

ACOs and accountable care in general cannot be successful without significant integration of health information technology into the entire care coordination model. Data transfer across platforms and practices will allow providers to increase the quality of care while lowering the overall cost.

  • Health information technology (Health IT) will provide vital support to a successful CMS Shared Savings and private/commercial ACOs
    • Successful ACOs must possess an information technology infrastructure that can support the governance, operational, and clinical goals and objectives
    • One quality measure of ACO participation under the Medicare Shared Savings Program (MSSP) requires ACOs to report the percentage of primary care providers who successfully qualify for an EHR Incentive Program Payment
    • Private/commercial ACOs will rely heavily on health IT to coordinate care and increase quality
