Humanizing Health IT
For St. Vincent Health System, EHR Meaningful Use is about much more than stimulus dollars. Here’s how the health system strives to make the process “meaningful” for its providers and, most importantly, its patients.

Saint Vincent joined the Allegheny Health Network – an integrated delivery network of seven western Pennsylvania hospitals focused on preserving health care choice and providing affordable, high-quality care - in July 2013.

“Simply, transforming a paper form into an electronic one isn’t going to revolutionize healthcare, and it isn’t going to have much of an impact on the patient. It’s what you do with that electronic data that matters." Richard Ong, Saint Vincent CIO

"St. Vincent is no stranger to health IT adoption. This health system consisting of a 427-bed hospital and vast outpatient network was one of the first in Western Pennsylvania to successfully attest for Stage 1 MU (with both its McKesson inpatient and its Allscripts outpatient system). The provider has also been recognized as one of 2013’s “Most Wired” hospitals by the American Hospital Association (AHA)." Ken Congdon, editor-in-chief, Healthcare Technology Online

Saint Vincent, founded in 1875 as Erie’s first hospital, includes a tertiary hospital in Erie, Pennsylvania, an acute care and diagnostic hospital in Westfield, NY and outpatient network spread across the northwestern Pennsylvania region.

"When patients can see how EHR tools impact their care, that’s when healthcare transformation will really take off.” Richard Ong, Saint Vincent CIO
