IDC Health Insights presented its annual healthcare predictions report at the end of November. Their predictions are designed to provide insight and perspective on long-term industry trends along with new themes that may be on the horizon. We have provided a summary of the annual report in the following infographic. The theme of these 2020 health IT predictions for independent community hospitals may very well be as follows: Effective IT and information management strategy is now central to success in an era of healthcare demanding more efficient and effective care delivery.

That may seem like an obvious statement, but it does reflect a significant change in thinking. Not that long ago for many independent community hospitals (and maybe still today for some), IT was a non-revenue generating department that was seen as a cost to be managed to the lowest possible number. Many independent community hospitals have grown accustomed to accepting poor performance for lower costs. Those days are over. Solid healthcare IT strategy, backed with enterprise technology and discipline is no longer something we can’t afford to do, it’s something we can’t afford not to do.
