The Translational Medicine Institute at Inova Fairfax Hospital will employ the GenoSpace Population Analytics system to analyze disease associations.

Inova Health System in Virginia has selected GenoSpace to provide a gateway for population analytics as part of a new initiative in whole-genome sequencing. GenoSpace Population Analytics provides analytical, visualization, and collaboration tools that allow health systems a secure, cloud-based system for data storage, integration of clinical, laboratory, and genomic information, clinical trial simulation, analytics, population stratification and biomarker discovery, and tools for collaborating across different groups, organizations, and geographies.

The Translational Medicine Institute (TMI) at Inova, which has sequenced more than 8,000 genomes from individuals in more than 100 countries, will utilize the GenoSpace platform as a scalable tool “to discover disease associations within these large and complex data sets” and translate these associations into the practice of medicine. Based on current enrollment data, the TMI will have sequenced approximately 20,000 genomes with corresponding clinical data by the end of 2015, the release continues.

According to Greg Eley, CTO of the Inova Translational Medicine Institute, the organization needed “an effective solution to the challenge of making petabytes of genomic data accessible to the scientists and physicians in our organization” and that the tools from GenoSpace enable the TMI staff “to efficiently gain insight from large quantities of complex information.”

The Inova Translational Medicine Institute is part of the Inova Health System. The TMI is located within Inova Fairfax Hospital, one of five hospitals in the Inova Health System. Together, the five hospitals in the system include more than 1,700 licensed beds and 16,000 employees. Inova Health System provides a full array of health services and includes the area’s only Level 1 Trauma Center and Level IV neonatal intensive care unit.

In addition to population analytics, Geno Space also provides solutions in clinical trial matching, physician and patient portals, and web-based patient communities, as well as systems for integration and comparison of different genomic assays. The company’s solutions are HIPPA compliant.
