The Carolinas Health System, which serves patients in both North and South Carolina, has received the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) Analytics Stage 7 Ambulatory Awards.

HIMSS Analytics is the data and analytics arm of HIMSS. The Stage 7 Awards are part of the EMR Adoption Model (EMRAM) program, which tracks an organization’s transition to EMR applications and grades facilities on a scale of 0-7, with 7 representing “an environment where paper charts are no longer used,” according to HIMSS Analytics. Hospitals and health systems eligible for this award must be part of the HIMSS Analytics Database. The EMRAM Ambulatory Award, which is what Carolinas Health System has received, is given to ambulatory facilities of organizations in the HIMSS Analytics Database.

Carolinas HealthCare System includes more than 900 care locations. Facilities in the organization include academic medical centers, hospitals, healthcare pavilions, physician practices, destination centers, surgical and rehabilitation centers, home health agencies, nursing homes, and hospice and palliative care. The organization includes more than 7,460 licensed beds. Specialty care is available in many areas, including oncology, pediatrics, cardiology, neuroscience, and more.

As of the fourth quarter of 2014, only 6.21 percent of the more than 30,000 US ambulatory clinics in the HIMSS Analytics Database had received the Stage 7 Ambulatory Award.

“Carolinas HealthCare System is clearly one of the country's leaders in use of data derived from their ambulatory EHR to drive improvements in chronic disease management,” said John P. Hoyt, FACHE, FHIMSS, executive vice president, HIMSS Analytics. “They have abundant evidence that disease states are improving in their patient population, all made possible by the strong foundation of data derived from their wide reaching ambulatory EHR.”

Carolinas HealthCare System will be recognized at the 2015 Annual HIMSS Conference & Exhibition, which is being held from April 12-16 in Chicago.
