The Two Sides Of HIE

Source: Health IT Outcomes

Compiled by Ken Congdon, Editor In Chief, Health IT Outcomes

Orlando Health's CTO Brian Comp discusses the challenges and successes associated with establishing effective HIE (health information exchange) both inside and outside his health system.

HIE. It's a key component of Meaningful Use and the primary means by which we will provide clinicians across the country with universal access to patient data when needed. It's also a two-headed monster. A complicated technology concept still short on standards, where the requirements for sharing patient data within a healthcare system don't always align with those for exchanging information with other hospitals and practices in neighboring communities, cities, or states. Orlando Health is a healthcare system currently engaged in this struggle, and its CTO Brian Comp recently shared the HIE strategies, challenges, and successes of his organization to date with Health IT Outcomes.
