Physician Groups In Iowa Recognized For Providing High Quality Primary Care To Medicaid Members

Amerigroup Iowa has announced that seven physician groups specializing in primary care across the state will receive incentive payments for providing cost effective, high-quality health care that resulted in better health outcomes last year for thousands of Iowans enrolled in the Iowa Medicaid program.

These are the first payments under Amerigroup’s Provider Quality Incentive Program (PQIP), which was established in 2017.

Participating physician groups must perform well on four out of thirteen nationally recognized quality measures, such as adult access to preventive care, well child visits, diabetic testing, cervical and breast cancer screenings, medication management for asthma and testing for children with upper respiratory infection. Groups in the program are measured on their quality performance based on how they compare to their peers and how much their quality scores improve year-over-year. This emphasis on high quality primary care leads to individuals staying healthy and out of the hospital, resulting in cost savings to the Medicaid program.

“Amerigroup is committed to being an innovative partner and working with physicians to provide appropriate incentives that lead to quality medical care, a simplified healthcare experience and positive health outcomes for the people we serve in the Iowa Medicaid program,” said Jeff Jones, president of Amerigroup Iowa.

Amerigroup’s Provider Quality Improvement Program last year resulted in more adults engaging with a primary care doctor, more children and teens visiting the doctor for a well care appointment, improved access to preventive care and higher rates of cervical cancer screenings.

The quality incentives were earned by the following primary care practices:

  • Methodist Health Partners
  • Medical Associates of Clinton
  • Iowa Health+
  • Community Health Care
  • Family Healthcare of Siouxland
  • McFarland Clinic
  • Burlington Pediatric Associates

Amerigroup serves approximately 345,000 people in Iowa Health Link and Hawk-i.
