Mexico City's Leading Breast Cancer Foundation Implements Cloud-Based EHR System

MEXICO CITY--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

MedWave Software Solutions, Inc. recently implemented HarmoniMD™, its cloud-based Electronic Health Record (EHR) system, at the Fundación de Cáncer de Mama (FUCAM) in Mexico City. FUCAM is the first and only breast cancer foundation in Latin America that provides comprehensive breast cancer care.

FUCAM is moving all clinical documentation from paper files to HarmoniMD in a staged rollout to ensure a smooth transition across 25 different departments that provide over 75,000 medical consultations annually. HarmoniMD’s implementation replaces tens of thousands of paper charts with the sleek efficiency of desktop and tablet access.

“We are very pleased to be working collaboratively with FUCAM to improve breast cancer care for so many patients. The improvements FUCAM is making, both in patient care and reduced costs, can be achieved by any hospital with HarmoniMD.” Dan Smith, CEO, MedWave

Mexico has set its sights on achieving a broad implementation of electronic health record systems by 2020. The continued digitization of Mexico’s hospitals through implementations of EHRs provides the means to better understand public health issues by improving the registration of clinical data. This data can then be used to understand incidence of disease, vaccination rates, and other widespread health occurrences. The adoption of EHRs is a very high priority among hospital administrators and physicians, as this provides real-time access to health records, improving hospital efficiency and clinical outcomes.

Barriers to adoption include costs that can run into the millions and lengthy implementations that last years. In contrast, MedWave’s low-cost solution, tailored to a hospital’s unique workflow, only takes a few months to implement.

“With HarmoniMD we have a better control of the activities that the staff is doing within FUCAM to guarantee day to day a better service to the patients. Likewise, as CFO of FUCAM, the monitoring of resource management is more efficient.” Lic. María Luisa Guisa, CFO FUCAM

About Fundación de Cáncer de Mama (FUCAM):

Fundación de Cáncer de Mama, FUCAM, a leader in Latin America, has evolved over 18 years to offer women diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of breast cancer, mainly in the most vulnerable groups in the country. With a medical staff of only 140 people, FUCAM treats 1,200 new cases of breast cancer per year.

Founded in 2000 by Dr. Fernando Guisa Hohenstein, FUCAM has developed a comprehensive strategy that begins with education and promotion of timely detection, precision diagnosis, and surgical medical treatment of breast cancer, as well as breast reconstruction.

FUCAM implemented the first program for the timely detection of breast cancer in Mexico. This program of “Campaigns of Pesquisa” consists of mobile diagnostic units that travel to areas of low income populations to offer mammography studies free of charge, diminishing mortality by breast cancer through timely diagnosis.
