Maimonides Medical Center Moves To InterSystems Ensemble For Hospital-Wide Integration
Ensemble's Advanced Software Technology Drives Decision to Migrate From eGate to Ensemble
InterSystems Corporation, the global leader in software for connected healthcare, recently announced that Maimonides Medical Center has implemented the InterSystems Ensemble rapid integration and development platform throughout the enterprise.
Brooklyn-based Maimonides was one of the first medical centers in the U.S. to recognize the essential contribution that technology can make in care delivery. The organization intensively pursues technology innovation and has received numerous awards for its achievements, including: the Computerworld Smithsonian Award, the Nicholas E. Davies Award and designation as one of the nation's 100 "Most Wired" hospitals by the American Hospital Association.
In-Depth Evaluation Leads to Ensemble Selection
The search for a new enterprise integration platform involved conducting multiple proof-of concept initiatives designed to explore the capabilities of a wide range of integration software products, according to Maimonides CIO Walter Fahey. "We found that Ensemble offers great usability with an interface that developers rated as very user-friendly," he said. "In addition, Ensemble delivers high performance combined with massive scalability in an extremely stable and reliable platform. And, the embedded InterSystems CACHÉ database that provides persistent messaging made troubleshooting fast and easy," he continued.
Ensemble's embedded data repository enables end-to-end management and monitoring of even the most complex integrated systems and of SOA environments that include loosely coupled services. Stored information includes all messages, process state, and metadata captured from working systems. And, Ensemble's browser-based management portal and Visual Trace facility enable developers to trace messages, and examine their content, as they move through the system.
Rapid Migration Complete—Looking to the Future
The transition to Ensemble was completed in June. Maimonides applications are now seamlessly integrated with more than 400,000 inbound and outbound messages being transferred via Ensemble on a daily basis. The conversion, including development of some completely new interfaces for Maimonides' Sunrise Clinical Manager system from Eclipsys Corporation, was handled by a 5-person team. "Even though we now have about 30 percent more interfaces than with our legacy clinical system, there was no need to add anyone to the in-place integration staff. That's clear evidence of the usability and rapid development that typify Ensemble," Fahey noted.
With the success of the migration, plans are to explore additional Ensemble capabilities. Fahey foresees the possibility of embedding InterSystems DeepSee business intelligence software along with Ensemble to enable real-time operational insights via dashboards. "We're committed to integration across the enterprise," he said.
"Maimonides is known as a leader in exploiting healthcare information technology to the maximum level in order to fully optimize care delivery," said Paul Grabscheid, InterSystems Vice President of Strategic Planning. "They've made major progress in their connected healthcare strategy and we look forward to working with them as they execute their innovative IT projects".
