Hospital Roadmap For ACOs

Source: Greenway Health

Hospitals will play a pivotal role in public and private/commercial ACOs as main care coordination centers. As such, hospitals must take into consideration certain requirements and challenges that uniquely affect their participation in an ACO.

  • According to Health Leaders Media, 11 percent of hospitals claim to already be part of an ACO as of April 2012
  • The most common structure will involve hospitals and physicians in partnership with one or more risk-‐sharing insurers
  • Hospitals can use ACOs to align with private physicians in ways that allow the physicians to be invested in continually improving the quality and efficiency of care delivered by providers and the entire continuum of care community
  • CMS will grant waivers to Medicare ACOs for certain federal laws such as Stark and the Anti-‐ Kickback statute to avoid hindering the formation and operation of ACOs
