Inova Health System Utilizes Next Generation Technology For Secure Patient Authentication

Inova Health System has integrated a next generation technology for electronic authentication and identity management, giving patients more secure, privacy enhanced online access to their health information and services.

The technology has been developed by the Cross Sector Digital Identity Initiative (CSDII), one of the first generation of pilots under the National Strategy for Trusted Identities in Cyberspace (NSTIC) – a White House initiative introduced by the Obama Administration in 2011 and housed in the National Institutes of Standards and Technology.

CSDII technology provides users with a credentialing service that supports greater trust and security for online transactions. CSDII replaces today’s cumbersome multi-password authentication services with a more streamlined, privacy-enhancing solution based on a series of multi-factor authentication events.

Inova opted for this new technology to give its patients ease of access to electronic health records, while increasing the safety, security and privacy of patient information. The initial launch will be with Inova’s VIP 360 patients. Planning is underway to determine when the service will be made available to Inova’s entire patient population.

CSDII is a consortium of organizations consisting of the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators, Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles, Microsoft, CA Technologies and Biometric Signature ID. CSDII is operated by Binary Structures Corporation.

Inova is a not-for-profit health care system headquartered in Falls Church, Va., serving more than two million people in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area with over 1,700 licensed beds. For more information, visit www.inova.org.
