Hybrid OR Raises The Bar For Medical Care At St. John's Hospital And Medical Center

Source: Skytron

St. John is a 722-bed teaching hospital with a reputation for excellence in cardiology, oncology, neurosciences, minimally invasive and robotic surgery, women's services, pediatrics and medical education. The hospital wanted a hybrid OR because of the patient care advantages it provides.

When St. John Hospital and Medical Center started evaluating suppliers to set up a hybrid operating room, the Detroit hospital contacted Skytron to provide robotic booms and lighting. The hospital expected to procure video equipment elsewhere.

But then the St. John project team found out Skytron also sells video integration equipment. "It just happened by chance that when I sat down to hear Skytron's presentation about booms, I asked them, ‘Which company do you deal with for video integration,'" recalls Michael Vicencio, application specialist at St John's cardiology informatics center.

Within a week, Vicencio was sitting at a video equipment presentation by Skytron, after which there was no question who would supply the lights, booms and video integration for the hospital's hybrid OR. Vicencio says Skytron offers superior equipment on all counts – flexible booms with excellent mobility; low-cost, color-correct lighting; and a high-definition video system integrated with the lights and booms.

These are all critical components in an operating room and, as such, they are integral to the operation of St. John's hybrid OR.
