HIMSS adds event for attendees to compete for prizes while managing personal wellness through use of activity tracker

Experience the “Self-Tracking Data Explosion” at HIMSS14! Attendees at this year’s conference are being challenged to track steps, calories burned, and distance walked to demonstrate their commitment to managing their personal health. Registered attendees and exhibitors of HIMSS14 can choose the first ever Wellness Challenge as an optional event for wellness fun, healthy competition, and prizes.

According to Pew Research, 21 percent of Americans use some form of technology to track health data. Wearable, mobile, gamified, and even ingestible technologies are all being used for personal health and wellness. “We think of these tools as pointing outward – as windows,” said Gary Wolf, contributing editor at Wired magazine and co-founder of The Quantified Self Blog. “I would invite you to think of them as pointing inward – becoming mirrors to get systematic improvement, self-improvement, self-discovery, self-awareness, self-knowledge. The self is our operations center, our consciousness, our moral compass. So, if we want to act more effectively in the world, we have to get to know ourselves better.”

To join the HIMSS14 Wellness Challenge, register for HIMSS14 and choose Wellness Challenge as an optional event. Participants may choose to compete in any or all of the following:

  • February 24 (day 1) – steps
  • February 25 (day 2) –  calories burned
  • February 26 (day 3) – distance walked

HITO Misfit ShineAn activity tracker device, computer-aided to monitor fitness-related metrics, is necessary to compete, and a Misfit Shine may be purchased in advance or at the Patient Learning Gallery Booth 2383 (Hall A), or participants may choose to use their own device. Once registered, participants must record their daily results by 4:30 p.m. on days 1 and 2, and by 3:00 p.m. on day 3 in order to be eligible for daily prizes. Winners will be announced at the Patient Learning Gallery at 5:00 PM on days 1 and 2 and at 3:30 PM on day 3.
