Capsule Reports Record Setting Year For Medical Device Integration

Solutions help hospitals realize the power of medical device data to enhance clinical and operational quality and efficiency.

Andover, MA /PRNewswire/ - Capsule Tech, Inc., the leading global provider of medical device integration solutions, today announced that the company continues its rapid pace of deploying its SmartLinx™ Medical Device Information Systems (MDIS) in hospitals worldwide. In 2014, the company added 190 new hospitals to the Capsule family, a 23% increase from 2013. Capsule added connectivity to 34,741 beds, which is a 17% increase over 2013 and the most in any one year in the company's 18-year history. Of the connected beds, over half are enterprise-wide licensed, indicating a significant shift in MDIS implementation to include lower acuity care hospital units, such as med-surg.

"Capsule continues to evolve and grow as a dynamic presence in the global healthcare marketplace, where we sold products in 23 different countries in 2014 alone," said Gene Cattarina, Capsule CEO. "As of January 1st, 2015 1,835 hospitals in 38 countries on five continents have deployed a Capsule MDIS, representing nearly 172,000 licensed beds. Customers worldwide have gravitated to both the vision and reality of our SmartLinx MDIS, with a desire to take advantage of its powerful device integration and information management capabilities."

Capsule's SmartLinx technology is currently capable of acquiring data from 18 different types of medical devices, and simultaneously sending that data to several systems including not only electronic medical records and clinical information systems, but also to alarm management systems, clinical decision support systems, patient surveillance systems, and data warehouses for use in clinical research.

"Enhancing patient safety and improving outcomes are key initiatives for healthcare institutions worldwide," said Kevin Phillips, Capsule Vice President of Marketing and Product Management, citing a November 2014 report by ECRI Institute that identified alarms management and inadequate alarm configuration policies and practices as the leading health technology hazard for 2015. Second was data integrity, including incorrect or missing data in electronic medical records or other health IT systems. With an average 200-bed hospital managing 350 medical devices generating 756 million data variables each day, the value of integrating medical device data for comprehensive and immediate data analysis can have a significant impact on the safety and quality of patient care.

"Over the next year, we will continue introducing powerful new SmartLinx tools that unlock the power of medical device data," added Phillips. "Our clients will soon be able to effectively apply the abundance of data gathered from the hundreds of medical devices to provide relevant information and analytics they can act upon to make better informed patient care decisions across their enterprise."
