Applying EHR Transition Lessons System Wide

Health IT Outcomes visited UPMC Hamot to talk with Dr. Richard Long, SVP & CMO; David Gibbons, executive VP & COO; and Lisa McChesney, director of information systems. Specifically, the trio talked about the lessons learned when transitioning its EHR from Soarian to Cerner – referred to as the “Big Bang” – when Hamot merged with UPMC in 2011.

Gibbons discusses what “useful information” was brought to UPMC Hamot’s “Big Bang” from the previous “Big Bang” UPMC conducted at UPMC Northwest. Also discussed is the importance of re-banding patients the night before go live and why education both the ER and patient registration staffs prior to the transition is vital.
